Fall/Spring Semesterly Programs
The SU London curriculum is designed to give students the opportunity to continue their undergraduate and graduate degrees in London, and to provide unique academic opportunities whilst allowing students to take as much advantage as possible of their time abroad. An extensive selection of liberal arts and pre-professional courses is offered each semester, ranging from survey courses in fields such as art history, politics and sociology to highly specialized courses in design, photojournalism and architecture. The courses are designed to make as much use as possible of London’s unique resources and opportunities, integrating them whenever possible into the curriculum, be it through class visits, guest speakers or case studies.
The faculty come from a variety of British academic institutions, including University College London, the London School of Economics and Central Saint Martin’s. Others, particularly those teaching Newhouse and Law classes, are professionals in their respective fields, and are joined by Visiting Faculty from the main campus. All of the faculty are aware of the pressures and demands of studying in a foreign environment, and are supported by the academic staff and the Writing Centre in their efforts to make the students’ academic experiences as valuable and rewarding as possible. The Michael O’Leary Prize for Excellence in Study Abroad Teaching is awarded to a faculty member nominated by the students each semester in their efforts to make the students’ academic experiences as valuable and rewarding as possible.

Slums, Slumming and Social Exploration in London’s East End with SU Prof. Kevin Morrison

Today it’s preparing for the Olympics but in the 19th century London’s East End was also in the news. Lurid accounts of sexual licentiousness, drug use, murders and horrific living conditions drew wealthy and middle class Londoners from their fashionable West End homes, churches and clubs. This course considers the East End in the Victorian social imagination and its so-called regeneration in the 20th century. Through walking tours and site visits, you’ll explore the geographic and economic divides of 19th century London. Additionally you’ll learn methods for interpreting literature and will implement them in dynamic class discussions; enhance your critical thinking skills through formal and informal writing assignments and acquire a greater appreciation of the relationship between literature and its historical, cultural and spatial contexts.
