Chocks Away! London is the ultimate launch pad for an exciting European adventure, and here at SU London we believe that field study trips and organised all school outings are a valuable means to enrich your experience abroad.
Here at SULP you will be spoiled by access to what London and the Continent have to offer!
Field Studies aim to provide:
- Closer contact with the British and European reality
- More direct access to the culture within which you are trying to integrate
- Enhanced opportunities to learn from direct experience about the subjects you are studying in class
What to expect?
- London is a theatre students dream! Certain courses will take you all over the world of London theatre.
- Interested in the European Union? ‘The European Union’ course takes you to Brussels, headquarters of the EU.
And Beyond Field Studies...
We aim to provide as many Field Trips to all SU London students as possible, to as wide a range of destinations as possible. Past students have travelled to Bath, Yorkshire, the East End, Canterbury, Stonehenge and Salisbury. We hope that students returning to the US will take with them a multi-dimensional view of the diversity and rich cosmopolitan history of the UK and Europe.
An all-school field trip has, for example, made several incredible weekend visits to Istanbul, and returned with an enhanced understanding of London and Europe’s relationship with and proximity to old Byzantium and the Near East.
The Jill Curran Program ensures students engage with London by providing guided walks across the city.
SU ♥ LONDON Weekends
In our specially scheduled ‘Stay At Home’ Weekends, students are encouraged to abandon their frantic pan European travel plans, and enjoy a special weekend here in the UK, participating in spectacular special events, and taking advantage of a range of field trips, walks, talks and other activities that will open up London and the UK in ways you would never have dreamed!
Course Related Field Trips Policy
Course Related MANDATORY Field Trips
Some courses at SU London have mandatory field trips, which means that the field trip is a requirement for the course. They are announced in the course syllabi and clearly marked as MANDATORY in your field trip schedule.
Those enrolled in such courses, are expected to participate on the field trips.
These field trips are normally exclusive for the students taking the courses; sometimes though a few spaces may become available and students who are interested in the subjects studied will be able to join. If spaces become available, they will be advertised to all students and they will be assigned by following a first come first served policy.
- Be sure that you make a note of the dates of the field trips on your diary and that you don’t make any other arrangements for those dates (you can get the details from the course syllabus or from your professor).
- Once enrolled in the course, you’ll be automatically charged on your bursar account. If you have any serious reason not to go on the field trip, you need to talk to your professor and agree on a different assignment to make up for the trip. You then need to see Michele Britton and fill out a petition form to avoid being charged the fee. You will still be charged for any expenditure that has already been incurred in order to secure your place. Please note that the same applies in case of sickness, where costs have already been incurred. Your medical insurance should cover this kind of incidents, however, and you should be able to claim your money back on your return to the States.
- If SU Abroad cancels a trip because we feel it is unsafe to go forward, we will absorb all non-recoverable costs, and will make a full refund to the students.
- ADD/DROP: Students dropping a course with a required trip, even within the drop/add deadline, are liable for the unrecoverable costs. Students adding such a course need to be aware of the required trip and accept responsibility for payment.
- Do you want a friend who is not in the class to join the trip? This is possible if spaces are available and with the professor’s permission. Before being allowed on the trip, though, they need to see Michele Britton to fill out a liability form and a payment form. If they are not students in our program, the students who are inviting them will have to pay for them for security reasons. Please note that priority is strictly given to students in the class.
- Students who cannot take part on the field trip cannot give their place to someone else.
- In case of conflicts with other field trips scheduled for the same day/weekend, please do not hesitate to talk to your professors about it. We are aware that this issue can arise and we will try our best to find a solution when reasonably possible.
Course-Related OPTIONAL Field Trips
These field trips are not mandatory, although they are designed to give a deeper understanding and insight into the topics of the courses to which they relate. Some of them are exclusive for students taking the courses, but sometimes spaces may become available and they will be then advertised to all students. Other field trips are open to all students but priority is still given to the students taking the courses. Most of these field trips have a limited enrolment number.
- As they are optional, you need to sign up and pay by credit card to participate in these field trips. The deadline to sign up will be announced during Orientation and/or the first day of class. You then need to go to see Michele Britton and fill out a liability form and a credit card payment form. Please note that by signing a payment form, you commit to go on the field trip. Should you decide not to go on the field trip after having signed up, you are still liable for the unrecoverable costs. SU London accepts Visa and Mastercard credit cards only.
- Do you want a friend who is not in the program to join the trip? Please see note above.
- Students participating in the field trip, who are not in the class need to prove an interest for the subject studied in the related course and to agree to the itinerary proposed.
- Students who have last minute problems: unfortunately you are still liable for the unrecoverable costs (your medical insurance should cover the expense though in case of sickness), but Michele Britton can try to sell your place to another student. If you have already been charged for the cost of the trip, you will need to make your own arrangement with the student who is taking your place in order to recover your money.

The Jill Curran Program
The Jill Curran Program is a unique opportunity for students to take advantage of London, not just as somewhere where they are living for a few months but as one of the world’s great cities. From the East End to the Thames river and from London’s Anglo-Saxon origins to its current incarnation as home to 10 million people, the walks on the Curran Program allow students to leave the classroom and their preconceptions and to truly experience London.
